The Africa Centre of Excellence on Data Governance and Digital Rights is a one-stop-holistic training and professional development Centre. The Centre is run independently by the University of Ghana School of Law under the College of Humanities of the University of Ghana. Its establishment is based on the need to create and maintain professionals, build consistent research and scholastic work around the evolving data (protection) governance dynamics in Africa and the world. The goal is to address the gaps that exists on the Continent in terms of research, training / capacity, skills, knowledge and the need to leverage on existing resources by creating a pool for sharing of such resources.

The Africa Centre of Excellence on Data Governance and Digital Rights is established under the patronage of the University of Ghana School of Law.
The Centre drives its mission through targeted initiatives focused on capacity building, content development, research, and academic support. These efforts are designed to strengthen Africa’s knowledge systems, address skills gaps, and promote Afrocentric scholarship in data governance and digital rights.
The Centre provides a platform for the teaching and training of professionals, industry and interested groups and individuals on the thematic areas. The course materials are informed by research and developed curricula and are centred on topical areas and evolving trends in ethics laws and policies along best practice models. Programmes are be delivered using hybrid and blended learning methods.
The Centre undertakes needs assessments into, and observations of the evolving space in Africa and globally and publish its findings to better inform ethics and the formulation of laws and policies. These needs assessments are conducted with key stakeholders across Africa and the world.
In order to address the human resource capacity gap in Africa, the Centre supports scholarly research on the thematic areas through scholarships and fellowships. The scholarships and fellowships are undertaken in different African and European countries to give our students an exposure to comparative approaches in policy, legal and governance aspects. In return, beneficiaries of such scholarships and fellowships contribute to the knowledge by sharing their research with the Centre for the benefit of the Continent.Â
