The Africa Centre of Excellence on Data Governance and Digital Rights is a one-stop-holistic training and professional development Centre. The Centre is run independently by the University of Ghana School of Law under the College of Humanities of the University of Ghana. Its establishment is based on the need to create and maintain professionals, build consistent research and scholastic work around the evolving data (protection) governance dynamics in Africa and the world. In addition, the Centre aims to address the urgent need to develop a sustainable Afrocentric scholarship and innovation on data governance and digital rights as well as to create the ecosystem that supports one fastest growing components of the trade ecosystem in Africa - the digital trade especially in the light of AfCFTA. It is a place invested in a focused and methodological approach that augments the body of knowledge on data governance and digital rights in Africa, instils best practices and develops skillset required for developing and enforcing policies and regulations to govern the various users of data in the private and public services, national, regional, and continental fronts.
ACE - DGDR is established under the patronage of the University of Ghana School of Law. Established in 1958, the School of Law has an experienced faculty, well versed in curriculum development, teaching, and training. The School has more than half a century practical experience in training and developing a crop of dynamic African oriented lawyers – with both theoretical and practical knowledge of the law. This Centre is run in partnership with the Africa Digital Rights Hub (ADRH), an international non-profit organization that promotes Pan-African research and capacity building on digital rights. The Centre works with various institutions and bodies to ensure its training is holistic and interdisciplinary. Organisations involved include University of Freiburg, Germany; University of Lagos, Nigeria; University of Pretoria, South Africa; and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana.
